Turkey Day with a Side of Cheese

It’s Thanksgiving Day once again and, of course, it’s 80 degrees in Houston. At least it isn’t 90, but I digress.

I’ve always liked Thanksgiving and not just because of pumpkin pie. Thanksgiving was always at our house as a kid, so the daylong festivities were great growing up.

One of my favorite things about Thanksgiving was the morning of. I’d always get up and then watch the parades. There are usually a number of different parades from Chicago, LA and even now the Houston parade has become a bit of a big deal.

But, nothing compares to the mutha of them all, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade from New York. Being from Texas, you’d think I would generally dislike all things NYC, but that isn’t the case. I love the place. And nothing is as quintessential New York – at least from a distance – than this parade.

Yeah, it’s kinda goofy that I like the parade, but I’m goofy. I admit it.

One thing that cracks me up is the “witty banter” between the hosts, now traditionally Katie Couric, Matt Lauer and Al Roker. Besides the fact that everything they say is like one long promo for NBC television shows or broadway productions, that constant fake “I’m so happy smile,” makes my day.

I mean, is there anything funnier than Couric worrying outloud that hi definition TV will show her wrinkles? Katie, I have news for you, no one gives a shit about your wrinkles.

And while I’m on the topic of cheesy, is there anything on this planet cheesier than broadway? I mean, even a bad movie like Dirty Rotten Scoundrels looks like an Academy award nominee next to the cast of the broadway production. Ok, maybe not award winning, but it makes it look much more masculine, that’s for sure.

To say broadway is dominated by gay men is like saying that the ocean is populated by water. It’s just a given.

Anyway, hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving, parades or not. Try not to stuff yourself too full of anything and remember to give thanks for all of the great things we have in our lives. We are all quite fortunate to be alive and celebrating another day together. Enjoy!
