The Joy of iTunes

iTunes is a great piece of software for downloading, organizing and buring music to CD’s, but I’m finding I REALLY enjoy the Party Mix feature in the latest version.

Sweet Talkin’ Woman by ELO…

Basically, this is a glorified randomizer that randomly selects songs from any playlist or the general library and plays them.

I’ve found this to be a really cool late night companion. Put on the headphones and randomize that library.

Winter by Bebel Gilberto…

Now, admittedly, there is the need to skip the occassional song. Wrong mood, holiday song or maybe something from a band rehearsal that is still in there. Maybe even some song on there that I’m just not into at the moment. But, that’s easy enough and it’s on to the next song.

What is really interesting is the synchronicity that happens. I’ll be posting something on an internet bulletin board about Rush and…

Beneath the Wheels by Rush…

It’s like it knows what I’m thinking. My wife swears that computers will one day take over the world and we’ll be sorry for giving them all that control. I’m not really convinced of that, but it is interesting how things work out.

There are also really great moments where I think, “Damn, I never would’ve put that combination together,” but it works. Flowing smoothly from a live version of Seal’s Prayer for the Dying into Mad About You by Sting might seem pretty obvious, but I never thought that going from Queensryche’s I Don’t Believe in Love into Wayne Shorter’s Bachianas Brasileras No. 5, but it worked and led nicely into the Bebel Gilberto.

All of You by Vertical Horizon…

So, I sit late at night and listen and find it hard on occassion to shut it down and head off to bed. I mean, what could be coming next? Would I have ever thought to pair Stevie Wonder’s Sir Duke with Billy Joel’s Running on Ice or Rosanne Cash’s The Wheel with Spybreak by the Propellarheads? Probably not. Thankfully, iTunes did it for me.

Sailing Ships by Whitesnake…
