I’m not a huge golf fan, but I am a sports fan and I did follow the news of the Father’s Day collapse by Phil Mickelson at the US Open. “Lefty” is known for being wreckless but that seemed to be behind him as he was poised on the final day of the Open to be only the third golfer in history to win three straight majors along with Tiger Woods, who missed the cut (news in and of itself) and Ben Hogan.
Mickelson choked the 18th hole to allow Geoff Ogilvy to take the crown by default.
None of that makes me respect Phil. What does is what he said afterward.
“I can’t believe I did that. I’m such an idiot.”
That is so refreshing. To hear an athlete just be totally honest and say, “You know what, I screwed up. That really sucked.”
I have a new respect for Lefty after taking his choking so well. Pretty rare in today’s sports world.
