Wow! What a weekend for Houston sports. The Astros wrap up the Wild Card. The Texans get their first winning streak. And, the brand new Rockets start training camp.
Amazing to think that more than 100,000 fans were at two sporting events Sunday. 70,000 plus at Reliant Stadium to see the Texans beat the Raiders and 43,000 plus at Minute Maid Park to see the Astros clinch a playoff birth with a win over the Rockies.
First, the Stros. I’ve said here before that I’m not a big baseball fan, but good grief, what an end to the year. Just look at the numbers for the close of the season:
7 straight wins
18 straight home wins
36-10 in their last 46 games
Charlie Palillo from 610 AM said the other day that only four other teams in major league history have had close to this record to end a season. All four were Yankees teams. Three won the World Series and the other was the famed Murderers Row team of 1960. Go ASTROS!!!
The Texans will finally get to shut up the media with their incessant calls for David Carr (and his father, Roger, who I am SICK of seeing on national TV just for his mullet) to cut his hair. The Texans put together their first 2-game winning streak with a win over the Radiers.
The did this with their third-string running back running for 100 yards against one of the best defensive lines in the NFL. They also did it with five turnovers forced by the defense. And, Andre Johson is the real deal. That kid is making miracle catch after miracle catch and his size and speed make him an absolutely devastating receiver. Go TEXANS!!!
Finally, one of the top 5 loves of my life behind my wife, my family and friends, my cats, music and my house, the Houston Rockets finally started training camp on Friday. This season is going to be freaking exciting with the acquisition of Tracy McGrady. Damn, I’m so ready for the first preseason game a week from today. Go ROCKETS!!!
It’s good to be a Houston sports fans. Just think, I believe that, for the first time in history, all three major sports teams could be playing on the same day next Sunday AT HOME. The Texans host the Vikings. The Astros COULD be playing game four against the Braves (depending on how the first three go) and the Rockets have their preseason opener against Shaq and the Miami Heat. WHAT A DAY!!!
