2006 in Review: The Year in Gear

Oh, it was quite the year for purchases related to music, photography or computer technology. I spent way too much money and loved pretty much every minute of it. Here’s a rundown of my purchases for the year, but only the big stuff. I’m not going to bore you with every software upgrade or guitar cable I got. Yipee!

Music Stuff

There were definitely some significant music purchases this year both in terms of recording gear and in terms of stuff for my bass.

MOTU Digital Performer 4.0

One of the best pieces of audio software around, this helps me sync up my recording with stuff Chris does in his studio.

MOTU Mach 5

An audio sampler, I’m just now figuring out how great this thing really is.

Line 6 Tone Port UX 2

Great simple and easy to use audio interface for my computer along with the classic Line 6 amp simulators for guitar and bass.

Blue Snowball Microphone

Coming this year as a result: podcasting.

EBS Octabass

One of the coolest octave pedals ever made for the bass guitar.

Tech 21 XXL Bass Overdrive

Just got this for Christmas and I’m loving it!

Ashdown Mag C210T-300 Bass Combo and Mag 210T 2×10 Cabinet

This was the mutha of all purchases for the year – a new bass rig. It has been an absolute joy to play with and I’m looking forward to throwing some serious bass around venues all year.

Camera Stuff

This has been a great year for taking photos and for new things to play with.

Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D AF

Since I got this lens in July, it has rarely been off my camera.

Gary Fong Lightsphere

No better diffuser for the flash. Period.

Nikon Speedlight SB800

Speaking of flashes, this was a gift from my dad and I love it. It is great to use with my SB600. Can’t wait to try some portraits.

Note: I am still waiting on a Nikkor 18-200 f3.5-5.6 ED VR DX lens that I ordered WAY back in March. It is in backorder hell.

Computer Stuff

My purchases this year for the computer were mainly for music, but I did get a couple things below that are good for everything.

Mac iBook

Man, do I ever love this thing. It has already travelled over 5000 miles with me, logged countless hours of blogging and photography and is about to be subjected to relentless recording this year. I custom ordered this one for the extra large hard drive and it was well worth it.

Apple Airport Extreme
I never realized how much I would love a wireless network in my house.

VST Power Firelite 60GB Firewire Drive

I have had a lot of external hard drives, but the portability and speed of this thing makes me want about four of them.

There you have it, my purchases, gifts and general gear gets for 2006. I’m hoping 2007 will add even more stuff to my selection of gear for this gear junkie!
